Court notes

Read while the clock finishes.

  1. 01

    Grip, measured once

A finger of space should remain when you wrap the handle. Too small and the forearm does the work. Too big and the frame twists. Vanta ships at 4 1/4. A sleeve takes it larger without a new frame.

  2. 02

    Why 16×19

An 18×20 bed is polite. 16×19 still bites when you brush up the back of the ball. The Vanta uses that open pattern so the Spin Reel has something to hold.

  3. 03

    Clay is a design problem

A clay shoe fails when the sole packs into a slick pancake. The Clayline herringbone is cut to shed. Knock the soles together at the changeover. That is the maintenance.

Surface

Pick the shoe for the court you play.

  • Clay

Herringbone, a low drop, and a sole that sheds dust. The Clayline is built for this and not much else.

  • Hard

More cushion, a flatter outsole, and durability for the same baseline over and over. Do not wear the clay sole here.

  • Grass

Short studs, a little slip allowed, a lighter upper. Different tool. The night duffel still carries it.
